The Continental Congress allows the expense of two dollars per week for the board and lodging of officers taken prisoner, but this amount is to be repaid by the officers as a condition of their release.

At Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina, American forces led by Captain Smith of the USS Hibernia conducted a reconnaissance of approaching British ships under the command of Captain Tobias Furneaux frigate, HMS Syren and the sloop HMS Raven, and the HMS Rittenhouse approaching Charleston Harbor.  The British fleet chases the USS Hibernia into Sullivan’s Island.  The Hibernia is protected by the 2nd South Carolina Regiment.
